CESARE DANDINI (ITALIAN 1596-1657) SAINT GEORGE Oil on canvas 46.5 x 32.8cm (18¼ x 12¾in.) Provenance: Private Collection, United Kingdom Exhibited: London, Royal Academy, 20 January - 18 February 1979; and Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum, 27 February - 28 March 1979, Painting in Florence 1600-1700, no. 11 Literature: M. Gregori, ‘A Cross-Section of Florentine Seicento Painting, The Piero Bogongiari Collection', in Apollo, C, no. 151, 1974, p. 229, note 16 G. Cantelli, Repertorio della Pittura Fiorentina del Seicento, Florence, 1983, p. 57 S. Bellesi, Cesare Dandini, Turin, 1996, pp. 83 & 135, no. 78 First identified by Mina Gregori in 1974 (op. cit.), this picture of Saint George is a fine example of Cesare Dandini’s elegant mature style that secured his reputation as one of the leading Baroque painters in seicento Florence. Bellesi (op. cit.) dates the picture to the mid 1640s and compares the composition with two earlier treatments of the same subject; a bust-length canvas in the Bigongiari collection, Florence (Bellesi, no. 29) and the octagonal half-length in a private collection (no. 30), both of which he considers to have been executed in the mid 1630s or early 1640s. The latter, whose octagonal format was much favoured by Dandini and other Florentine painters of the period, notably Carlo Dolci, was described by Bellesi as one of the ‘capolavori indiscussi della poetica dandiniana’ (op. cit., p. 82) and was sold at Sotheby’s, New York, 29 January 2009, lot 38, for $542,500. The head of Saint George corresponds closely with that of Dandini’s two drawings in red chalk of Saint Michael, preserved in the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi (n. 16295 S) and in the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart (n. C73/ 2333). Condition Report Disclaimer, CESARE DANDINI (ITALIAN 1596-1657), SAINT GEORGE, CESARE DANDINI (ITALIAN 1596-1657) SAINT GEORGE Oil on canvas 46.5 x 32.8cm (18¼ x 12¾in.)
