Antique bentwood chair in the Thonet (or Viennese) style. Solid wood steamed to shape, finished with a walnut varnish. The seat is padded and upholstered in a light-colored fabric (ivory/cream), decorated at the center with cross-stitch/half-stitch embroidery depicting a woman in a pink traditional dress. The backrest features the classic double intertwined arc in bent wood, typical of the Austro-Hungarian cabinetmaking tradition of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Linked to the Bentwood style (bent wood), made famous by Michael Thonet from the mid-19th century. The hand-embroidered fabric work suggests a domestic personalization produced around the mid-20th century. The wood shows a pleasant patina of age with light surface wear consistent with its age, enhancing its authenticity.
