Changing Direction - Newel Hunter

Changing Direction by Newel Hunter Painting 16.0 x 20.5 :: Changing Direction showcases an evocative composition dominated by a minimalist palette made primarily with shades of blue red and white. The texture is rich and tactile characterized by vertical and slightly diagonal ridges and grooves that create an almost icy or frosted surface effect. The strokes have been applied thickly layering the paint in a way that emphasizes its physical presence. The background is darker contrasting with the luminous quality of the lighter textures in the foreground which adds depth and intrigue to the piece. The work retains some organic movement creating rhythm and an abstract suggestion of natural elements like ice waterfalls weathered surfaces and human forms. Hunter’s use of texture here is compelling and invites the viewer to explore the painting visually as well as imaginatively encouraging a sensory interaction that is quite engaging. The subtle variations in tone within the limited color palette lend the work a serene yet enigmatic atmosphere allowing the viewer's mind to wander and find their own meanings within the abstraction.
