Charles du Cange – Glossary of Scribes of the Middle and Late Latin – Set of 6 volumes Important reference work devoted to medieval and late Latin, Charles du Cange’s Glossarium ad scriptores mediae et infimae Latinitatis stands as a major achievement of European historical and philological scholarship. This vast dictionary allows the study of medieval Latin vocabulary, institutions, customs, and the historical realities of this period. It remains a valuable tool for historians, Latinists, bibliophiles, and lovers of old books. The set comprises six folio-format volumes, bound in antique brown leather, decorated with gold-engraved vegetal motifs on the spines with raised bands. The title and volume labels bear alphabetical indications to locate the different parts of the work. The illustration includes a frontispiece engraved and a portrait of Charles du Cange in volume I, as well as an engraved illustrated title. Volume IV contains ten off-text engraved plates depicting, among other things, coins, medals, and monograms. The interior features a dense typography in two columns, enhanced by drop caps, banners, and engraved typographic ornaments. The volumes end with inscriptions such as “Finis tomi primi,” marking the end of the respective volumes. A fine old set intended for connoisseurs of learned books, bibliophiles, and enthusiasts of medieval history and the Latin language.
