Charles Leickert (1816-1907) - Havengezicht - NO RESERVE

Artist: Charles Leickert (1816–1907) Title: Harbour View Technique and support: oil on panel Dimensions: 26.5 × 39 cm; with frame 48 × 60 cm Signature: hand-signed lower left Provenance: collection of a Dutch art dealer Artist Charles Leickert (1816–1907) was born in Brussels and died in Mainz. He trained in The Hague, where he studied with Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove, Wijnand Nuijen and Andreas Schelfhout. He worked for a long period in The Hague and Amsterdam. His oeuvre includes landscapes, winter scenes, cityscapes and seascapes and belongs to nineteenth-century Romanticism. Object description The painting shows a harbor with sailing vessels and rowboats before an urban backdrop. To the left is a ship with sails set; in the centre several boats with figures. On the right stands a house and a lower outbuilding on a vegetated shore, with a few figures by the water. Piers and driftwood occupy the foreground. On the horizon towers, roofs and masts outline themselves. A broad expanse of cloudscape in light blue, gray and soft pink tones contrasts with the brown hulls of the ships and the dark shore. Warm highlights return in the reflections. The signature is located bottom left in the water surface. Technique and material analysis The work is executed in oil on a wooden panel. In the sky and water, flowing color transitions alternate with discrete brush strokes. Masts and rigging are indicated with fine lines; short, opaque strokes mark figures, vegetation and light reflections. The paint layer shows an extensive craquelé pattern. Infrared reflectography (IRR) reveals parts of a different, overpainted composition beneath the current scene. In the upper right, above the current sky section, a boat motif is recognizable. This motif belongs to an earlier painting of the panel and deviates from the visible arrangement of the harbor view. The full original composition and the circumstances of the overpainting have not been established. Composition and formal analysis The low horizon leaves a large part of the picture plane for the sky. The sails on the left and the buildings on the right frame the through-view across the water. The central boats connect the two sides, while the sloping shoreline guides the eye from the right foreground toward the harbor. Overlapping, scale diminishment and decreasing contrasts enhance the sense of depth. Vertical masts and piers interrupt the horizontal structure of water and horizon. Red clothing accents and light reflections form focal points within the predominantly subdued color palette. Stylistic and art-historical context The combination of a harbor scene, small-scale figures, detailed nautical motifs and a pronounced atmospheric light treatment aligns with Dutch Romantic painting. The dark foreground, lighter far distance and warm reflections support this stylistic placement. Comparable artists Andreas Schelfhout, Wijnand Nuijen, Johannes Christiaan Schotel, Eugène Isabey, Richard Parkes Bonington Condition The panel shows an old crack that has been stabilized on the backside. The crack line remains visible on the front. There is craquelé, localized paint loss and old retouchings. Varnish has recently been removed. Around the signature this treatment has been carried out only to a limited extent due to the vulnerability. Conclusion Harbour View fits within the nineteenth-century Romantic harbor genre in the oeuvre of Charles Leickert. A precise dating has not been established. The signed panel contains an underlying, different composition and shows aging signs and earlier restoration interventions, including a stabilized panel crack and retouchings.
