Chinesco Seated Pottery Figure with Splayed Legs, Nayarit

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco. A pottery figure of a seated person with outstretched legs slipped in red and cream with black details. The rounded head is capped by a cream band, and the face is painted red with small black dot eyes, a pointed nose, and ears set at the sides. The arms are modeled in low relief against a cream-slipped torso, with the hands resting at the waist. The legs spread wide and taper to rounded points, finished in red slip. Chinesco figures belong to the West Mexican shaft tomb tradition and were placed in tombs with the dead. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 205668
