Chinese "Cadogan" wine pot, Kangxi period, peach-shaped in "famille verte" porcelain, mid-17th century. 13 cm high. An identical example is held in the Victoria & Albert Museum (inv. C.1166-1910). "Cadogan" wine pots were created in China as "dao guan hu" (inverted wine pots) in the shape of fruit. They served as entertainment pieces at banquets. They lack an opening or lid at the top, which makes them appear impossible to fill. The liquid is introduced by turning it upside down, through a hole in the base connected to a central tube that prevents the liquid from spilling when it is turned upright again.
