CHINESE SWATOW POYCHROME-ENAMELLED CHARGER

Ming Dynasty, ca. AD 1368 - 1644 > A Chinese Zhangzhou, or Swatow, porcelain charger painted in coloured enamels with bold decorative motifs within a broad rim. Accompanied by a wooden storage box. Zhangzhou wares, traditionally called Swatow, were made in southern China for overseas markets. Their bold designs and large serving forms became part of maritime exchanges connecting China with Southeast Asia and beyond. Their history is therefore one of both Chinese manufacture and use in other societies. > > Size: 355mm x 85mm; Weight: 2kg > Provenance: Private London Collection; Ex.
