A small granite chôzu’bachi 手水鉢 (water basin), carved from a single piece of stone in the form of a chrysanthemum 菊 (kiku). Rounded, full petals encircle the deep central basin. The mottled grey and white granite has gently softened contours. Chôzu’bachi were traditionally used for cleansing the hands before entering a sacred space or taking part in a tea ceremony. In a garden, the flower-shaped basin is also a sculptural feature. Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912–1926). Dimensions: Approximately 16 cm high and 22.5 cm in diameter. In very good original condition, with some surface weathering consistent with outdoor use. Please refer to the photograph for a clear impression of the condition.
