Cigar box - Metal, Wood - Art Deco cigar box

Amsterdamse School / Art Deco cigar box – red-gold geometric decor – ca. 1920–1930 A particularly decorative Dutch cigar box from the interwar period, executed in a pronounced combination of the Amsterdamse School and Art Deco. The box immediately stands out due to its bold geometric decoration in red and gold, with the inscription “SIGAREN” on the central part of the lid. The abstract zigzag forms, triangles and highly stylized ornamentation harmonize nicely with the geometric formal language that emerged in the Netherlands in the 1920s alongside the Amsterdamse School. Comparable Dutch smoking accessories from this period are dated to around the twenties and regularly combine the architectural look of the Amsterdamse School with the crisper geometry of Art Deco. The exterior is made of metal with a gold-toned base and red-decorated panels. The sides feature a continuous angular ornament, making the box attractive from every direction. Under the box are four small ball feet, a handsome detail that gives the whole an elegant, almost furniture-like appearance. The hinged lid opens to an interior finished in wood, as is common with luxury cigar and cigarette tins from the Art Deco period. Similar boxes from circa 1920–1930 combine a metal or brass exterior with a wooden interior. Because the original decoration is still clearly visible and the charming patina of age is present, this is not only an attractive collectible for enthusiasts of historic smoking accessories but also a characterful decorative object for an Art Deco, Amsterdamse School, or vintage interior. Features - Object: cigar box / cigar tin - Style: Amsterdamse School / Dutch Art Deco - Period: probably circa 1920–1930 - Provenance: probably the Netherlands - Material: metal with wooden interior - Color scheme: gold-tone with red decoration - Inscription on lid: “SIGAREN” - Geometric Art Deco decoration - Hinged lid - Four ball feet - Unmarked Condition The cigar box is in an authentic vintage state with clear signs of use and aging. It is precisely these signs of use that give the object its original character. The wooden interior also shows slight signs of use appropriate to its age and use. A atmospheric and graphically strong cigar box from the Dutch interwar period, in which the expressive Amsterdamse School and the geometric Art Deco come together in an attractive way.
