Nowadays, diamonds are often cut using fully automated processes, scanned by computer, and their ideal cut profile is calculated. The cut is being perfected more and more, so that the gemstone industry ultimately produces the same, uniform product every time: after all, one brilliant-cut diamond is supposed to look exactly like another. Diamonds cut more than 100 years ago, on the other hand, are distinguished by their individuality. In an era when every facet was still cut by hand and the rough diamond was closely examined to bring out its greatest beauty, the variety of diamond shapes produced was far greater than it is today. The diamond presented here illustrates this impressively. The stone’s diamond—a so-called “Old European Cut” from the late 19th century—gives it character, and its shape makes it unique. Its colour is a warm K and it features a few small inclusions in the form of light-colored crystals and dark graphite inclusions within its interior (SI2). The diamond weighs 1.23 carats. We have sustainably crafted the ring with its classic platinum prong setting: Both the diamond and the platinum of the ring are made from repurposed materials—these are reused historical materials.
