One of the oldest representations of angels in Christian iconography is the tuba angel or trombone angel. These representations are found, for example, in church architecture, paintings or the so-called illuminations of medieval manuscripts. The trombone is either an allusion to the heavenly hymn of praise, or to the Last Judgment: "Wondrous sound the trumpet flingeth; Through earth's sepulchers it ringeth; All before the throne it bringeth", it says in the medieval hymn Dies irae. This motif, so rich in cultural and historical references, is also shown in the present cameo. It is carved in shell in the traditional style and shows an angel blowing a trombone above a mountain landscape. The simple gold setting fits snugly around the cameo and has two mounts on the back, so that the piece of jewellery can be worn as a brooch and pendant. We were able to acquire the piece from a well-stocked collection of fine cameos and intaglios. It is in very good condition.
