Claude Landry - Malleus Maleficarum

LOTTO — MALLEUS MALeficarum, 1620 INSTITORIS, Henricus; SPRENGER, Jacobus. Malleus Maleficarum, maleficas et earum haeresin framea conterens, ex variis auctoribus compilatus, & in tres tomos juste distributus. Lugduni, sumptibus Claudii Landry, 1620. Important sixteenth-century edition of the famous Malleus Maleficarum, a monumental collection dedicated to witchcraft, demonology, magic, and heresy. The work, originally attributed to Heinrich Institoris and Jacob Sprenger, was reprinted several times between the 16th and 17th centuries and represents one of the best-known testimonies of European demonological literature. Example composed of three volumes bound together in two volumes, in Latin, with an editorial structure divided into multiple parts and with pagination specific to the individual sections. The volumes collectively contain about 1,900 pages according to the physical count of the exemplar. The work distinguishes itself by typographic title pages printed in black and red, elegant typographic marks and woodcut engravings, ornate initials, and the characteristic 17th-century typographic composition. The photographs also document the presence of texts and treatises devoted to the nature of demons and magical practices, including the “De natura daemonum.” The two volumes preserve old full-leather bindings, with raised nervures and gold decorations to the spines. The papers show the natural browning and the characteristic alterations typical of antique paper. There are handwritten annotations, ancient foliation, possession marks and ex libris cartouches affixed to the preliminary leaves, elements of particular interest for the provenance history of the exemplar. Condition: overall coherent with the age of the volumes; bindings with evident signs of use, abrasions and losses of material to the spines and edges, worn capitals, browning papers, and stains and signs of use. Also noted are some imperfections and material shortages to be verified during collocation. An exemplar to be collated in full. Edition: Lyon, Claude Landry, 1620. Language: Latin. Format: in-8°. Composition: 3 volumes in 2. Pages: about 1,900 total, according to the physical count of the exemplar. Binding: full leather contemporary or antique, with decorations and raised nerves on the spine. Rare trio from the 17th century of notable historical, bibliographic, and collecting interest. THE BOOKS WERE EXHIBITED AT THE VENICE SECRET EXHIBITION AT PALAZZO ZAGURI IN VENICE
