"Geografia universale del Padre Claudio Buffier della Compagnia di Gesù, tradotta dal francese nell'italiano. Edizione nona." Venice, at the presses of Francesco Pitteri, 1772. 438 pages + 17 maps. 15.5x9 cm Claude Buffier (1661-1737) was a French philosopher, historian, and educator born in Poland to French parents, who returned shortly after to France and settled in Rouen. A Jesuit and professor at the Louis-le-Grand College in Paris, he was one of the most widespread didactic authors of his time. His Géographie universelle became famous for its pedagogical method, designed to shorten and facilitate the study of the subject, with mnemonic verses to fix the names of countries and cities. The Italian translation was a real editorial success in Venice, in the hands of the Pitteri house, which reissued it for decades. The fourth edition came from its presses in 1747, and this ninth edition of 1772 is presented updated with the sovereignty changes that had occurred to date and with the new discoveries. The copy is one of the geography manuals most read in eighteenth-century Italy, the work of a Jesuit author of reference and produced by one of the great Venetian publishing houses, of interest for the history of the teaching of geography. It contains 17 maps: World Map, Europe, Italy, France, the Low Countries, the Holy Roman Empire, Upper and Lower Rhine, Spain, Great Britain, "Suez, Norway and Denmark", Poland, Muscovy, Turkey in Europe, ancient and modern Greece, Asia, Turkey in ancient and modern Asia, Africa, The parchment binding is in good condition. Front cover restored due to loss of paper in the central part. Moisture stains on the leaves that mostly do not affect the text. Some of the leaves of the desplegable maps protrude at the edge of the book.
