Jaguar D-Type Longnose #8 24h Le Mans 1955 The best race car ever? The 1955 Jaguar D-Type LN by Norman Dewis (1920-2019) Although he only took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans once, he played a modest but essential role in Jaguar's successful run in this race during the 1950s. This car was specially designed by Malcolm Sayer to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The LN D-Types won Le Mans in 1955, 1956 and 1957. Afterward Jaguar briefly withdrew. The design made use of aerospace technology that was revolutionary at the time. The cockpit, i.e., the cabin section, was a monocoque construction, largely made up of sheets of aluminum alloy. Coureur Norman Dewis worked as the chief test and development engineer from 1952 to 1986. He drove truly interesting and special cars during that time, but nothing compares to the 1955 Jaguar D-Type with the long nose.
