Cokedale, Colorado. Gottlieb Mercantile Company. 1911 5 Cents. PMG

Cokedale, Colorado. Gottlieb Mercantile Company. 1911 5 Cents. PMG Very Good 10. No. 73177. Little more than a company town that was once home to about 1,500 individuals at its peak. Cokedale was originally established by the American Smelting And Refining Company (ASARCO) in 1906 and area mines produced about 1,500 tons of coal per day while 350 coke ovens produced 800 tones of coke daily through the 1940s. In 1947, ASARCO shuttered its mines and pulled out of Cokedale and the town's residents were given the opportunity to buy company homes which saw about 50 local families stay after ASARCO's withdrawal which directly preceded the town's incorporation in 1948. PMG comments "Rust Stains, Tape." Estimate: $700 - $1,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
