This precious medical and pharmaceutical work from the eighteenth century is a reference edition of the Viennese pharmacopoeia. One volume in-12 bound in full calf of the period, spine with raised bands ornamented with gilt compartments and equipped with a red morocco title-piece bearing “PHARMAC. VIENNENS.” Wear and losses at corners and edges. Spine cracked on the first board. Good overall condition. Old dampstains at the beginning of the work. Interior generally clean. The book contains a Prolegomenon pharmaceuticum (defining various spagyric and chemical terms such as the Alkahest or Alcohol) as well as numerous classes of remedies and traditional medicinal preparations (such as the Classis Prima of Acetis and the “Acetum Bezoardicum”). Originally published to standardize and regulate the practice of pharmacy in the states of the Archduchy of Austria, this official dispensary was the indispensable tool of apothecaries for the precise dosing and composition of magistral remedies of the Enlightenment era.
