HISTORY – GENEALOGY – POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY – 18th CENTURY ANONYMOUS / COLLECTIVE WORK The Sovereigns of the World. A work that reveals the Genealogy of their Houses, the Extent & the Government of their States [4 Complete Volumes] At The Hague, by Alberts & van der Kloot (or co-publishing edition), early 18th century Complete four-volume suite bound in full period vellum, an indispensable repository of political and dynastic geography of Ancien Régime Europe. Complete set of the 4 volumes (Volume I to IV). Each spine bears an antique manuscript title slip or inked title indicating the work’s title “The Sovereigns of the World” as well as the roman numeral volume numbering (I to IV). Texts enriched with tables and detailed notices on the sovereign houses, territories, forces and institutions of the era. A highly popular reference work and constantly reissued under secrecy or by the great booksellers of Holland at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries to inform diplomats, courts and scholars about the state of the world. Period vellum presenting a warm natural patina, normal signs of wear (light stains and dirt befitting the era), solid bindings, hinges and spine well preserved. Paper of fine grain, a complete set in four volumes, text clean and uniform with rare foxing inherent to old paper. A true “almanac of power” of the Baroque Europe, The Sovereigns of the World served as a geopolitical breviary for all who wished to understand dynastic marriages, successions and the power of European courts before the great upheavals of the Revolution. Rare copy.
