Commodore Isaac Hull 1825 Signed Naval Document

One-page handwritten naval document signed "Isaac Hull" by Commodore Isaac Hull (1773-1843), celebrated American naval officer and commander of the USS Constitution during its famous victory over HMS Guerriere in the War of 1812. Dated March 1, 1825, aboard the U.S. Frigate United States at the Chincha Islands, the document is addressed to Samuel L. Southard, Secretary of the Navy. Hull authorizes payment of $6,000 to Captain James Goodrich of New York, payable thirty days after sight of his fourth bill of exchange, with the first three remaining unpaid. Signed boldly "Isaac Hull" at the conclusion. Hull's victory aboard USS Constitution in August 1812 established his reputation as one of the early American Navy's most prominent commanders. This document dates from his later naval service and concerns financial transactions conducted aboard an American warship. Exhibits original folds, light toning and scattered staining.
