Cornelis 'Cor' van der Zwalm (1884 – 1955) was an authentic and fascinating figure within the Rotterdam port and maritime painting. Because he was a true 'einzelgänger' and his name was sometimes written in different ways (such as mistakenly Coer), he is in the art world mainly known under this name. From dockworker to artist Van der Zwalm was originally a dockworker in the ports of Rotterdam. The raw dynamism, the smell of coal and oil, and the imposing ships grabbed him so strongly that he wanted to capture this on canvas. He attended an artistic education at the evening academy in Rotterdam to master the technique of painting and drawing.
