Corneille (1922-2010) - Le dernier village de Van Gogh - Exemplaire d'artiste

Carborundum lithograph on heavy vellum paper. Edition: 60 numbered copies. Approx. 48 x 54 cm. Number 39 Guillaume Corneille here depicts the church of Auvers-sur-Oise, painted by Van Gogh, amid his familiar menagerie: the Cobra snake, the cat, the bird-effigy in the profile of African sculpture, the Poissant Flying [Volant] present in his work since the 1940s, the greyhound. Identified as an important figure in the renewal of abstraction in Northern Europe, Corneille gradually shifts from 1967 toward a rich and colorful New Figuration that aligns with the Pop Art taste of the 1960s and 1970s, and exhibits alongside Andy Warhol, Arman, César, etc.
