Studio of Cornelis Janssens van Ceulen (Cornelius Johnson / Cornelis Jonson van Ceulen, London 1593 – Utrecht 1661) - Oil on canvas - Anglo-Flemish / English School of the 17th century - Dimensions: 83 x 70 cm in frame / canvas 69 x 57 cm Title Portrait of Sir Nicholas Martyn, Knt. (Portrait of Sir Nicholas Martyn) Dating: Second quarter of the 17th century, circa 1625–1640 with possible conservation interventions and subsequent restorations. Sir Nicholas Martyn (1593–1653), son of William Martyn, belonging to an important Devon family. Historical sources remember him as owner of Oxton and Kenton; he was knighted under James I, became High Sheriff of Devon and subsequently a Member of Parliament. A genealogical-antiquarian source relating to the Kenton monument also confirms that Sir Nicholas died in 1653 and married Elizabeth Symes. CONDITION REPORT Support and conservation state The reverse shows a canvas with evident natural oxidation and a support structure that merits attention. Small localized interventions are present, including fragments of gauze/canvass applied in correspondence with areas of the inscription. On the recto a fine and diffuse craquelure is visible, particularly legible on the flesh tones and in the pale areas of the ruff. There are also surface inhomogeneities and areas that may correspond to old conservation interventions, retouchings or varnish variations. The surface overall remains stable despite signs of age and irregularities. Frame The gilded frame, with molded profile and angular vegetal decorative applications, period: indicatively in the 19th century, probably in the first half/second half of the century, crafted in the spirit of 17th-century frames. It shows abrasions to the gilding, small gaps, wear and local losses in the ornamental elements, compatible with its age. *** Photographic note Some photographic images of the work were taken with the aid of professional studio lighting and spotlights to allow better legibility of the composition, details and painterly matter. This lighting may cause slight variations in color perception and brightness compared with viewing the work directly. The photographs are intended for illustrative and documentary purposes only. The frame is provided free of charge as a complimentary item with the work and should therefore be considered an accessory element, not included in the economic valuation of the painting. Given the natural fragility of antique gilded frames, any damage, detachment, breakage or loss of frame parts occurring during transport or shipping cannot be the subject of refund, compensation, or dispute regarding the value of the work. The packing will nevertheless be prepared with maximum care to ensure, as far as possible, safe transport. Insured shipping Attributive Expertise *** For reasons of historical interest the work cannot be shipped outside the European community / insured shipment in a wooden crate
