Cortland, New York. H.J. Messengers Bank. 1860 $1. PMG Very Fine 20.

Cortland, New York. H.J. Messengers Bank. 1860 $1. PMG Very Fine 20. No. 7503. Plate A. A fine rarity from Upstate New York. This evenly circulated $1 Obsolete issued by a private bank that originally organized in Marathon before moving to Cortland is a rare item at any grade level. Many were ruthlessly redeemed by the bank's operators after closing in 1868 and very few survivors managed to escape redemption efforts. One such example with a numerical grade of "15" sold for $576 in one of our 2024 auctions, but a caveat is warranted as that piece bore testament to various issues including a comment for "Contemporary Annotations." This example though is unequivocally the finer of the two and should no doubt please the collector who specializes in Obsoletes from Upstate New York. Estimate: $600 - $900. Provenance: From the Caine Collection. Click here for certification details from PMG.
