Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica. A compact figure emerges from a block of vesicular volcanic stone, seated with legs folded and arms laid across them, the pitted grey surface still bearing the bite of the pecking tool that shaped it. Faint swellings at the chest suggest breasts, and the head is capped by a flat, tablet-like headdress that squares off the silhouette. The underside of the folded legs forms the working face, polished smooth by long grinding and pounding, so the sculpture is at once image and implement. Such dual-purpose ground stone tools served in the preparation of pigments, foodstuffs, or medicinal plants, and the choice to render the handle as a human body, likely female, gave the labor a presiding figure. Anthropomorphic manos, pestles, and pounders of this kind are widespread in Costa Rican lithic assemblages. Costa Rican stoneworkers drew on a landscape that supplied them generously: the volcanic cordilleras yielded basalt, andesite, and porous lava rock, coarse and forgiving under the hammerstone, and these materials underpin an entire tradition of metates, manos, mace heads, and effigy pestles from the Atlantic Watershed and Greater Nicoya zones. Grinding equipment in this tradition was rarely purely utilitarian. Metates were carved with jaguar heads and avian panels, and handstones were given faces and bodies, folding the domestic act of grinding into a wider vocabulary of animate objects. A pounder shaped as a seated woman sits comfortably in that logic: the tool is worked by hands, and the tool itself is given a body that works. Item # 205002
