Crucifix - Opaline glass - 1950-1960 - Crucifix - 52 cm

This object is a vintage modernist crucifix, made of polychrome painted opaline glass (milky glass) set in a wooden frame with a mosaic edge. This particular type of religious wall art was produced widely in the Netherlands in the mid-20th century (circa 1940–1970). Characteristics of the artwork Origin: Many of these opaline glass crucifixes were designed by artists such as Jan Perey or Frans Balendong for well-known ateliers, including the Gebroeders van Paridon in Amsterdam. Style: Modernist and expressionist influences, recognizable by the stylized, elongated body shapes of Christ and the dark, atmospheric background. Material: The translucent opaline glass provides a soft light behind the painted details. The edge is finished with small white mosaic tiles. Symbolism: At the top is the traditional inscription INRI (Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum). The stigmata and blood drops on the side and feet are further accentuated with red paint. F.F.: These are the initials of the artist or the atelier. In Dutch religious art from that period (especially around the well-known ateliers in Amsterdam and Limburg) this most likely stands for the artist Frans Franciscus. Carefully packed for shipping
