19th-century Limoges enamel on copper, depicting the Crucifixion on Golgotha, with the skull at the base of the cross, the Virgin on the left and a sorrowful figure (perhaps Saint John or Mary Magdalene) in prayer on the right, on a dark blue background studded with stars. Translucent polychrome enamel on a metal support (copper), with gold highlights and finely rendered details. Exceptional quality. A small loss of enamel at the apical marginal edge has undergone conservation restoration to allow viewing the work in full without artificially reconstructing anything. A very similar enamel was sold by Christie’s for 1,410 pounds (1,643 euros), as in the last photo.
