Descriptio Oil on copper. Dimensions: 22 x 17 cm. Scene of the martyrdom of Saint Peter, crucified upside down, as a symbol of humility before Christ. Four executioners manipulate the saint’s body with a tense choreography of gestures and tense anatomy. The stark background and the twilight light reinforce the solemnity of the moment. The work employs a sober palette of earth tones, ochres, and carmines, which are intensified by the copper technique, providing clarity and richness of detail. The composition, with marked diagonals, and the expressive pathos, recall the Roman Baroque of the first half of the 16th century, influenced by Caravaggist models. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
