The Principality of Achaea was a major Frankish state established in the Peloponnese after the Fourth Crusade. Under Charles II of Anjou (1285–1289), it formed part of the wider Angevin sphere in the eastern Mediterranean. Governed largely through appointed officials, Achaea retained strong French feudal institutions and a flourishing denier tournois coinage. In 1289, Charles transferred the principality to Isabella of Villehardouin and Florent of Hainaut.
