Crusaders Armenia

Crusaders Armenia

A fascinating medallic coin pendant associated with the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia and the reign of Levon I (Leo I, 1198–1219), a ruler whose kingdom stood at the crossroads of the Christian East and the Crusader states of the Holy Land. The pendant displays strongly medieval imagery and inscriptions arranged around a central design. The surviving relief, irregular edges, surface wear and dark age-related patina give the piece a particularly evocative character. Converted for suspension with a ring, it can be worn today as a striking historical pendant. Levon I was one of the most important rulers of Cilician Armenia. Crowned king in 1198/1199, his reign coincided with the Crusading period, when Cilician Armenia maintained close political, military and religious relations with the Latin Crusader principalities. For this reason, Armenian coinage of the period represents a remarkable meeting point between Armenian Christian tradition and the wider medieval Crusader world. The symbolism of such an object makes it particularly appealing as a historical talisman. In the medieval Christian world, sacred imagery and inscriptions were closely associated with faith, divine favour, protection and legitimate kingship. Reimagined as a pendant, this piece evokes the ideals of the medieval warrior: courage in battle, loyalty to faith and protection under God. The reverse is especially attractive, with its strongly defined central motif surrounded by the remains of the circular inscription. Rather than restoring or artificially improving the ancient surface, the pendant retains its irregularities, wear and historical patina, preserving the character acquired through centuries of survival. A distinctive wearable piece of Crusader-period history — connecting the warrior kings of Cilician Armenia with the Christian world of the medieval eastern Mediterranean. Included a 60 cm silver chain with matching silver suspension ring is included, elegantly transforming this historic piece into a wearable pendant while preserving the ancient object as the central focus.
