First Edition Oroz De Apicibus The Five Books of Civil Law, by Jerónimo de Oroz (Hieronimo de Oroz), Lugduni (Lyons), printed by Phil. Borde, Laur. Arnaud & Cl. Rigaud, 1661. Folio (35 x 22.5 cm at binding). Pp. (28), 408, (40). Complete. Contemporary limp parchment binding, with manuscript title on the spine (“Oroz de Apicibus Iuris Civilis”). Some signs of handling, but a solid and genuine copy. A legal treatise in Latin, by the Navarrese jurist Jerónimo de Oroz (from Burguete, Kingdom of Navarre), professor and canon at Salamanca (Pinciana Academy), specialist in Roman civil law. The work, published for the first time (“Nunc primum in lucem prodit”), gathers in five books about two thousand civil-law texts, interpreted and illustrated with acuity, focusing on the “apices iuris” (the subtleties, the extreme points and the most refined questions of law). The books treat, among other things, the Cato’s Rule, topics of possession, actions, successions, contracts and other classic figures of the Corpus Iuris Civilis, with a rich apparatus of citations and a detailed Index rerum notabilium. Original edition and very rare for a specialized work of high quality, intended for jurists and scholars of common law. The author, a prominent figure in the Salamanca school of the seventeenth century, offers an original contribution to the exegesis of the Roman sources. Copies of the first edition of 1661 are scarce on the antiquarian market and are found mainly in Spanish university libraries; there is a later edition from 1733, but the present one remains the princeps, sought after by collectors of Roman law and of seventeenth-century bindings. Complete copy, in an era binding, suitable for collections of ancient jurisprudence and of Spanish/Italian legal books of the seventeenth century.
