signed and dated 'Frink ’73' l.r., pencil and watercolour, 58.5 x 82.5cm; framed 63 x 87cm, Stride & Son, Chichester, 24 May 2020, lot 1389, where acquired by the present owner. ‘[The] horse sculptures are...to do with the ancient spirit of the horse and with its evolution in relation to man’, Elisabeth Frink, quoted in Edward Lucie-Smith and Elisabeth Frink, 'Frink: A Portrait', Bloomsbury, London, 1994, p. 50. Dame Elisabeth Frink was a British sculptor, draughtsman and printmaker, most well known for her powerful sculptures of animals, birds and the human figure. The theme of horses became a key element of her work, stemming in part from her experience growing up in wartime Suffolk, where she spent time riding, as well as her move to southern France in 1967, where frequent visits to the Camargue region introduced her to its famous semi-wild horses. Frink created horses in an expressive style, using simplified forms and textured surfaces that convey a sense of strength, movement, freedom and vulnerability.
