Dan - Côte d'Ivoire

An excellent and ancient Dan running mask. It was used in Sagwe dances to protect the village from fire. The red fabric, probably taken from a military jacket, was sometimes replaced by a red indigenous paint made from kola and chicken blood. The articulated jaw was covered with monkey fur, giving it a very fierce appearance. Interesting are the small wooden sticks used in place of nails. Very good patina from long use. Height: 26 cm.
