Daniell (William) and Thomas Daniell Landscape with the house of Samuel Davis (1760–1819), Bhagalpur, pencil, on laid paper with countermark 'IV', inscribed in ink verso 'No. 131 [struck through] Davis house Bhagalpore', 235 x 375 mm (9 1/4 x 14 3/4 in), sheet laid onto wove paper support with ruled grey ink borderline, exposure lines from previous mount and associated minor toning, light surface dirt, unframed, [circa 1789-1790] Provenance: Private collection, UK *** Between the years of 1789 and 1790, the Daniell's visited Bhagalpur, where they stayed with their good friend, Samuel Davis. Mildred Archer suggested that they ended up staying with Davis for more than a year; it is likely that the present drawing was produced during this period.
