Lot of 2 volumes concerning the works of Dante Alighieri. Splendid and rare Cosmographic Table. " to facilitate the understanding of some cosmographic points of the Divine Comedy imagined and declared by M.G. Ponta Somasco which serves as a continuation to Dante Alighieri's clock" M.G. Ponta Somasco Turin - Pompa Printing 1843-1844 - Very important and rare fascicle. Dante describes skies, stars, constellations and hours very precisely, but readers of the 1800s no longer understood that Toledan cosmology; Ponta Somasco created this table with celestial sphere + terrestrial globe to explain where Dante was in each canto. TABLE with figure I on the right: The complete Dantean sphere above Mount Purgatory with 7 steps. Below Hell in an inverted funnel with Lucifer. In the middle the Earth with Dante and Virgil's journey. All set within the zodiac circle. Figure II on the left: The celestial sphere Sun, Zodiac, Equator. It serves to understand the astronomical positions that Dante gives in the cantos. Figure III lower left: The terrestrial hemisphere with Jerusalem. In 8th - original fascicle, green parchment cover with contemporaneous handwritten title to the cover plate. On the inside of the cover, large text probably by the author. Handwritten watermark paper pages 48 (39/86) + large folded cosmographic lithographic plate measuring 22 x 15 cm. In very good/excellent state of preservation Pages and plate clean, only small foxing/time halos normal for the era, slight waviness, cover with small tears. - The Divine Comedy Ulrico Hoepli Publisher - Milan 1914 Complete work of all 3 cantiche. Commented by G. A. Scartazzini, revised by G. Vandelli with a perfected rhyme by L. Polacco (the most important edition of the twentieth century). 8vo volume - stiff editorial binding in beige cloth with a golden raised medallion on the cover and Dante’s profile. Red edges - spine with titles and lilies of Florence Pages 1080 + 97 pages of the rhyme. Dimensions 19 x 13 cm Interior pages clean and smooth, only normal signs of time and small foxings, spine with halos, ownership inscription and small tear at the upper corner of the third page. Important edition because G. A. Scartazzini was the greatest Dante scholar of the 1800s. His commentary remains a milestone today. Fundamental for scholars is Polacco’s rhyme. See photos
