Darren Vigil Gray is an American contemporary painter and musician of Jicarilla Apache and Kiowa Apache heritage, born in Dulce, New Mexico, in 1959. Raised on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation, he began his artistic training at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, graduating in 1977, before continuing his studies at the College of Santa Fe and the University of New Mexico. He studied under influential Native American artist T. C. Cannon and was inspired by Fritz Scholder and Abstract Expressionists including Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Gray established himself as a prominent figure in contemporary Native American art during the 1980s, developing a distinctive painting practice combining abstraction, personal mythology, and Indigenous cultural traditions. He has exhibited extensively throughout the United States, including at the Roswell Museum and Art Center, the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian, and numerous galleries in Santa Fe. His work is represented in the collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian and the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts in Santa Fe Good estate condition.
