DAUM FRANCE ☨ – Vase “Lagoon” – Created around 1960-70. Magnificent and rare sculptural vase signed DAUM FRANCE, model “Lagoon,” remarkable for its bold geometric architecture and for the extraordinary depth of its intense blue. A fascinating color that evokes both the mineral nuances of Lapis-lazuli and the deep waters of a blue lagoon, whose light variations seem imprisoned at the very heart of the crystal. A true crystal sculpture, this creation stands out for its slender, decidedly architectural silhouette, composed of powerful stacked geometric volumes that appear to interlock with one another. The material is especially seductive: thick crystal, deep vibrant sapphire blue, with subtle speckled and nuanced effects reminiscent of the rich mineral tones of Lapis-lazuli. Under light, the material comes alive with a multitude of variations and reflections, giving the vase remarkable depth. At the core of this imposing blue structure, a long vertical opening runs through the composition like a genuine light fissure, while the lower part is punctuated by wide expanses of perfectly clear crystal. These through openings create fascinating games of transparency and depth: the gaze literally penetrates to the heart of the vase, while light refracts on the polished edges and illuminates the blue from the inside. Depending on orientation and lighting, the crystal metamorphoses before the viewer’s eyes, revealing successively sumptuous tones of midnight blue, cobalt, and lapis-lazuli. Despite its relatively modest dimensions of 23 cm in height and 13 cm in width, this vase has a particularly striking and imposing presence, enhanced by the generous thickness of its crystal and the power of its volumes. Weighing about 1.5 kg, it immediately surprises when held in the hand by its density and its beautiful tactile feel, reinforcing its truly sculptural character.
