The glassworks Daum Frères in Nancy, founded in 1878 by Jean Daum and later made famous by his sons Auguste and Antonin, was one of the key figures of the Art Nouveau movement. Together with their neighbor and competitor Émile Gallé, the Daum brothers put the French city of Nancy on the world map as the absolute center of glass art. Around the turn of the century (1900) they broke through internationally with their innovative techniques, such as acid etching, the application of enameling, and the rediscovery of the pâte de verre (glass paste) technique. Their vases, lamps, and bowls stand out for their flowing, organic forms and motifs directly inspired by nature, such as flowers, insects, and mysterious landscapes. When the popularity of Art Nouveau waned after the First World War, Daum proved its resilience by seamlessly shifting to the clean, geometric forms of Art Deco. Today the Daum brand still exists and their historic pieces are worldwide regarded as exclusive and highly sought-after collector’s items.
