"This is confidential—there were a great many who would feel badly if they knew there were any autographed copies at all!" First edition, inscribed: "To Miss Anne Roe with very best wishes / Ernest Hemingway / September 1932." With a charming letter from Sterling Galt at Charles Scribner's Sons, who sends the inscribed Hemingway to Miss Roe, noting that the author "hates to autograph books but finally consented to do ten so that yours is one of only ten existing autographed copies which makes it of considerable value." He adds in a post-script: "This is confidential—there were a great many who would feel badly if they knew there were any autographed copies at all!" Octavo. Original black cloth, gilt signature to upper cover, backstrip decorated in gilt (rubbing to spine and extremities). Custom cloth slipcase. [ Together with: ] Typed letter signed from Charles Scribner editor Sterling Galt to Anne Roe, 5 October 1932 (separating a little along fold).
