Large polychrome porcelain group sculpture 'Young satyr fights sea dragon' Thuringia (Germany), ca. 1880–1910 A decorative porcelain sculpture in late-19th-century Rococo Revival style, depicting a dynamic combat scene: a young satyr — with the upper body of a child, goat legs and a golden floral wreath on the head, wrapped in a leopard-print cloth — fighting with a spear or lance a winged sea creature (sea dragon) with its mouth wide open on which he rides. The group is hand-painted in soft pastel colors with rich gilding on the wreath, wings and drapery, and rests on an organically shaped wave base (no rock or shell accents). The Bacchic satyr motif combined with a maritime combat scene makes this a lively, narrative decorative piece, characteristic of the Rococo Revival production from German porcelain factories in the Thuringian region. The lance and the dragon tongue are loose parts. In good used condition, with light signs of wear and smudges. Damage to the hand that holds the lance, dragon tongue and tips of the wings. Not distracting. Please see photos. Dimensions: ca. 27 cm H ca. 26 cm D ca. 20 cm W Weight: 2 kg+/- Will be well packed and insured for shipping.
