Adoration of the Child – a homage to Defendente Ferrari’s “Night Nativity” Interesting devotional painting depicting the Nativity and the Adoration of the Child, created as a tribute to the famous Defendente Ferrari composition, Adorazione del Bambino (Natività notturna), dated 1510, one of the most evocative subjects in the painter from Piedmont. The composition mirrors the setup of the celebrated Ferraran work, characterized by the evocative nocturnal setting and the strong contrast between the illuminated areas and the surrounding darkness. At the center of the scene the Baby Jesus lies on the ground, beside the kneeling Virgin in an attitude of adoration. In the background appear the ox and the donkey, while on the right the figures of Saint Joseph and other characters are barely emerging from the shadows. The particular lighting focused on the Child gives the scene remarkable concentrated intensity and devotional feeling. The work is executed on a rigid support, with painting characterized by a predominantly dark palette, enlivened by the flesh tones and the brighter details of the figures. The recovery of a model of great importance in Piedmontese painting testifies to the interest in ancient figurative tradition and in the popularity of religious compositions by Renaissance masters. To further enhance the painting, the important period wooden-and-plaster frame is richly worked and gilded. The frame features a wavy and articulated profile, with Rocaille motifs and volutes and foliage ornamentation, enriched by applied decorative elements and by a refined geometric incised surface.
