Delicate pendant brooch in star shape with seed pearls in gold, Great

The stars are in blossom, the moon is in flower, And bright are the windows of night in her tower. The elves sing this song in J.R.R. Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit as they wander through the forests of the Shire at night and sing of the beauty of nature. This pendant reminds us of this, as it combines the star motif with little calyxes that sprout up between its rays. The delicate star is set in gold with small seed pearls and can be worn as a pendant on the antique chain. However, if the chain is removed, the pendant loop can be folded in and the star can be worn as a brooch. This dual function, as well as the design and workmanship, are typical of British pieces of jewellery from the years around 1900. The last image we show is a page from a contemporary catalog illustrating the abundance of corresponding floral pendants in turn-of-the-century Britain.
