DENMARK. 2 Krone (Corona Danica), 1618. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC AU-55. KM-61; Dav-3516; Hede-105A; Sieg-87.1; Harck-12.5.2; Schou-12; Bruun-5007. Weight: 37.40 gms. Mintmaster: Nicolaus Schwabe. A most impressive piece boasting a very handsome toning and plenty of original luster. This beautiful broad Krone (Corona Danica) is the archetypal coin of Christian IV. Inspired by the English Crown, the denomination was introduced in 1618 to circulate at a value of 1½ Speciedaler. However, the king debased the silver content to line his own depleted pockets. Foreign merchants quickly discovered the fraud and refused to accept the new "Kroner" at face value. Among the Danish public, the king's abbreviated motto, RFP (Regnat Firmat Pietas - "Piety strengthens the realms"), was swiftly reinterpreted as Riget Fattes Penge ("The kingdom lacks money"). Estimate: €1,400 - €1,800. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Joh. G. Guildal Collection (Private Sale - 1918); later published by the Danish Numismatic Society as item 599 in his collection. To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E.
