DENMARK. 8 Skilling (?), 1565. Visby MInt. Frederik II. NGC VG Details--.

Bafflingly Pedigreed and of the Utmost Historical Importance DENMARK. 8 Skilling (?), 1565. Visby MInt. Frederik II. NGC VG Details--. Private countermark. Hede-35; Sieg-18; Schou-2; JS-23; Llt-12; Delzanno-92; Bruun-4503; Weight: 4.29 gms. While the reverse with the Lamb of God is rather worn, the unusual obverse including the original punched initial presents nicely. The only privately owned example with only two others being in the Danish National Museum (5.70 gms.) and the Swedish National Collection (3.45 gms.). As the weight of the three known examples vary considerably, the actual denomination isn't all together clear. Struck in the name of king Frederik II but bearing Bille's coat of arms and stamped with his own initial, this extraordinary silver coin is indisputably among the most intriguing and historically significant pieces within the entire Bruun Collection; furthermore, among all Danish coins outside the Royal Collection, it possesses one of the oldest documentable provenances. Jens Bille (1531-1575) was a prominent Danish-Scanian nobleman who served as the governor (lensmand) of Gotland from 1560 to 1570. During the Northern Seven Years' War (1563-1570), he successfully defended the island against Swedish incursions. Proprietor of the estates of Lyngsgaard and Vram (subsequently renamed Billesholm) in Scania, Bille is also highly regarded posthumously for Jens Bille's "Visebog", a seminal manuscript collection that remains a vital source for early Danish vernacular ballads. Estimate: €10,000 - €15,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922). Ex: Henrik Hielmstierne Collection (Private Sale - 1812); published in 1786 as No. 25, p. 240 in his collection. Ex. referenced in Johannes Laverentzen: "Museum Regium" (Copenhagen - 1710), # 19. Ex. illustrated in Peder Hansen Resen: "Kong Frederik II's Krønike"; (Copenhagen, 1680). To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E. Bruun Collection, click here.
