DENMARK. Conquest of Stade Silver Medal, 1712. Frederik IV. NGC Unc Details--Cleaned. Galster-300; JS-605; Ossbahr-162; Barhfeldt-43; Bruun-15500. Diameter: 60 mm. Weight: 108 gms. By Peter Berg (P Berg / PB). An extremely rare medal; imposing in both size and imagery, the medal is beautifully toned, and the reverse especially catches the eye with soft toning and a richly detailed city-scape of Stade under siege, in the foreground surrendering to the Danish king on horseback. The Hanseatic city of Stade, on the Elbe just west of Hamburg, fell under Swedish rule the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, which ended the Thirty Years' War. in 1712, during the Great Nordic War (1700-20), the city was besieged and surrendered to the Danes. During the siege, the city was so heavily bombarded that 1/4 of the built-up area of the city was destroyed. To ad insult to injury, the plague killed 30-40% of the population that same year. Today, Stade is a beautiful city with many historical buildings despite its history. Estimate: €2,000 - €3,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection.
