ear Gem Mint State and One of Only 131 Struck. DENMARK. Courant Ducat, 1771. Copenhagen Mint. Christian VII. NGC MS-64. Fr-280; KM-624; Hede-3; Sieg-26; Schou-2; FP-E7; Bruun-7755. Weight: 3.10 gms. Mintmaster: Hans Schivern Knoph (K). Engraver: Johan Ephraim Bauert (B). A truly magnificent example, featuring superb mint bloom, crisp, sharp details, and an exquisite, sensitive portraiture of the young King. This beautiful one-year type saw a tiny mintage of only 131 pieces, struck for the King's birthday on January 29th. Most were distributed as largesse money at the Christiansborg Palace riding grounds. The issue was instigated by Johann Friedrich Struensee, the minister and physician to the mentally ill King. Just a year later, Struensee was arrested, beheaded, and quartered for his affair with Queen Caroline Mathilde. Two portrait dies were made of which the present is by far the rarest. Estimate: €16,000 - €18,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E. Bruun Collection, click here.
