DENMARK. Pattern 20 Skilling, 1644. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV.

The Holy Grail of Danish Hebrew Silver Coins DENMARK. Pattern 20 Skilling, 1644. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC AU Details--Tooled. KM-PnB8; Hede-147; Sieg-73; Harck-35.7; Schou-60; Aagaard-KP2; Bruun-5699. Weight: 8.09 gms. Mintmaster: Heinrich Köhler. Albeit tooled in fields, the overall appearance is striking with a subtle luster and perfect details. Justifiably considered the Holy Grail among Christian IV's silver Hebrew coinage, this pattern coin is known in only two specimens, the other of which is held by the National Museum of Denmark. The design is entirely unique, as it is arguably the single Danish coin where the date is given the most prominent placement; indeed, the only unbroken legend on the obverse of the coin reads "ANNO 1644". Unlike the other Hebrew silver coins, it bears no denomination, but the weight clearly indicates that it is a 20 Skilling piece. That the pattern coin was never put into production may be due to two factors: The Hebrew tetragrammaton legend rendered the V incorrectly, and although the value would be on a par with the old Rigsmark, the denomination of 20 in a duodecimal system would be impractical.
