DENMARK. Penny, ND (1047-75). Lund Mint. Svend II Estridsen. NGC AU Details--Peck Marked. Hauberg-8; Hauberg Collection-cf. 858; Bruun-1674. Weight: 1.02 gms. Moneyer: Wulfet. A very beautiful, lustrous example, well struck with a deep-blue cabinet toning. The obverse design imitates a Byzantine gold Histamenon Nomisma of Michael IV (1034-41), depicting archangel Michael standing beside the emperor who is being blessed by the Hand of God. Here, it has been changed so that the Manus Dei has become a long Viking braid on the "emperor", who is likely the king Svend himself, carrying the Gospels in his left hand. Estimate: €400 - €500. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E. Bruun Collection, click here. Please note: Bid amounts do not include VAT. Buyers which are non-VAT registered entities or individuals who take delivery of lots within EU countries subject to margin scheme taxation will be invoiced a VAT charge and a Buyer’s Premium for a total of 27.5% based upon the total amount of the hammer.
