DHANENS (Elisabeth). Hubert and Jan Van Eyck. Paris, Albin Michel, n.d. A substantial large quarto volume, in the publisher’s green cloth binding, with a light-colored cloth spine bearing a gilt title and a gilt “EYCK” monogram on the front cover, with an illustrated dust jacket. French edition, translated by Jacques Gengoux, of Elisabeth Dhanens’s major monograph on Hubert and Jan van Eyck. An in-depth study of the Van Eyck brothers’ work and their role in the emergence of 15th-century Flemish painting. The author compares the works with historical and documentary sources and naturally gives central attention to the Ghent Altarpiece, its attribution, and the respective contributions of Hubert and Jan. The book constitutes an important scholarly synthesis on the Van Eycks and remains a sought-after monograph for its documentation. A beautiful copy in its original publisher’s binding; dust jacket showing some scuffing and signs of wear, with a small tear at one upper corner; interior in very good condition.
