Dogon - Mali

Excellent Dogon mask belonging to the group that features an ostrich, stork, or hornbill on top of the mask. According to Griaul, it symbolizes the flight of the ancestral spirit incarnated in a bird, and that perches on the dancer and gives him a bird's-eye view to observe the village's situation, etc. Good overall patina.
