Domingo Apellaniz (1898-1957) - Escena costumbrista

• Foreground on the left: Two men engage in conversation. One wears a coat in a deep blue with gold embroidery, matching breeches, white stockings, and a tricorn. His companion wears a coat in vibrant red or garnet with a gold waistcoat, holding what appears to be a walking cane or a sword. • Foreground on the right: Two ladies walk together, dressed in elegant winter coats or thick capes with fur trim (one in pink tones and the other in dark brown) and coifs or bonnets, keeping their hands tucked in mittens to protect themselves from the cold. • Background and retinue: In the middle ground, more figures in period costumes are visible, including a man with a red coat on the right and other characters who seem to accompany a carriage or a hand-litter with a covered canopy. Environment and Atmosphere • The ground: The scene unfolds on a cobblestone street that appears completely wet or shiny, suggesting it has just rained or is drizzling, softly reflecting the colors of the clothing and the sky. • The architecture: In the background, a villa or European city with an antique aesthetic is outlined, with steeply pitched roofs, chimneys, and a tall tower that recalls the structure of a church or bell tower. • Color palette: The overcast sky and the buildings use gray, ochre, and muted tones, which strongly emphasize the saturated colors of the main characters’ attire (blue, red, and pink). DIMENSIONS WITHOUT FRAME: 54 HIGH X 65 WIDE
